BIRTHDAY OF A TRUE ARTIST

Today I'd like to share with you something special.
The thing is that today is a Birthday of one of the most creative, brave and alive people I know - Olga Malahit - talented Ukrainian make up artist based in Kiev, Ukraine.
Olga IS an artist who runs make up school, make up shop, photo studio and conducts amazing projects such as Creative Fridays (more about it you can find out by clicking the CREATIVE BEAUTY sidebar icon).

Deep double exposure - we are the stardust

If only we could really see each other, we would understand that every moment of interaction we touch with each other's stardust.

Valencia + Madrid = {my September Spanish adventures}

To begin with: few weeks ago I quit my full-time job and exactly the week before that I was suggested by Asya to go stay in Valencia for some time, so I thought why wouldn't I make myself a "happy quitting" present :). I'm not gonna bore you with details of the trip but definitely will share some adventures that happened to us and my own impression of the country I saw.

What you should know is that we've spent in Spain almost 2 weeks and visited only 2 cities: Valencia and Madrid (for 2 days only). I know many of you will say that I should have gone to Barcelona and etc., I know, but not this time. I am totally not fan of changing cities every day. I like to spend much time in one place, get in touch with local people, culture, eat local food, try to speak local language (ooooh, in Spain this is really the most useful skill :)). This is how I get to know the country, from the inside, with the deeper look then just running through the cities, you know. Well, it's just me, anyway.

Deep Double Exposure Photography - {Insideout 11. Life in infinitive}

Double exposure photograph of a girl and a grass
{Insideout 11. Life in infinitive}

I don't want realism, I want magic!

Magical story of a girl in woods, forest fairy

Little girl playing on the yard - special day with a special person

Little girl dreamy portret
I got a great chance to photograph my niece. Look how brilliant she is! I like these pictures in black and white more, but I've also attached few in color.
Her face is full of joy, her eyes are full of hope, world around her is miracle and fairy tale. This is why I like to stay with kids, for some time you recall this feeling of wonder and curiosity which we loose in our life routine. <3

DIY cups for succulent or other plants - my small window garden is getting bigger!

DIY pot and cups for succulent plants
DIY pot and cups for succulent plants
As far as my little succulent friends are still alive (why it could be opposite - read here :)) I've decided to make them look even more cool on my window.
First of all - I took the simple and the cheapest plastic cup, PVA glue and pretty thick garden twine. All you have to do is spread the glue over the cup and roll the twine over it. Wait 15 min till its dry and this is it!
Next - I've put some decorative drainage into the glasses, pots with the flowers are standing right on this drainage. What you have to remember - is to make few little holes in the bottom of the plastic glass so it wouldn't moisture and condensate.
Also I've taken an old wooden wine box, cleaned it and painted with white acrylic paint - now it serves as a great decoration to my window!

Another small decorative tip - you can take small stones, decorative one in any color and different sizes and put it over the soil. It serves 2 goals: first of all it's beautiful and the second - the stones will prevent soil from drying and being covered with a dry crust.
You must have noticed that I got one more small succulent plant - little aloe. It was sold with one leaf damaged but I think I'll cure it soon..if it won't make surprise to me and die (to understand this creepy joke read again this post).
The third spot in the wine box is waiting for new succulent plant in my house!

P.S. All the materials for such DIY lesson you can buy in construction materials store, planting store or store with home decor stuff.
Hope it was useful and you enjoyed!

Giveaway - Love is in the air Pillow!

Well, last month I had a wholesale order for the pillows with my design. And I've got the last one pillow which I've left for myself.
Few days ago I decided to give it away to someone who will like it as much as I do, simply share the small piece of my modest art with the World.
So please take part in this #giveaway if you like the pillow and want to spread some Love :) Follow the link to the Grain Pixels facebook group where the giveaway takes place!

I'd like to tell the story that's standing behind one of my pillows.
You see, I have a friend, she is an artist. Asya has always been very supportive and very devoted friend when talking about my art. She is one of the people who inspires you when you feel exhausted, who shares creative ideas and good mood when you need it and loves to make small gifts. Once I had a thought that it would be cool to make her a small gift back so I simply presented her one of my pillows. The same day she had a hard time to get home from #Maidan (if you know about the last events in #Ukraine), caught the car which was going her way. That girl who was driving really helped Asya out so as a gift of gratefulness she presented my pillow to the girl. She told her that someone really special presented this pillow to her and now she presents this pillow to that girl so it would bring happiness to her home.
This is how people share love and warmth, this is what I want to participate in.

May be you are the next one?

P.S. The photograph of birds on wire was taken in November'13 in Goa, India - the most peaceful place I've ever been yet. So may it brink peace in your home too.

From Grain to Pixels - sweet memories

You have to see this :))
was surfing through old pictures on my computer and found this - me developing film photographs late at night two years ago. A good friend of mine brought equipments and reagents to my house and taught me how to use it. This is when I've experienced magic for the first time! When you see how the image is developing from a white paper under the red light of lamp - this is something amazing, something that I really miss when shooting on digital camera and processing images.

How to create DOUBLE EXPOSURE in Photoshop TUTORIAL - 1 kilo of seeds, frozen fingers, 19 photos and 10 minutes of Photoshop:)

how to create double exposure effect in Photoshop

This is how I spent my day off - 2 hours on the balcony when -5 outside, 1 kilo of seeds and frozen fingers.

Concept and shooting part
When I made this photograph of a girl I knew that there should be birds flying out of her chest, something that would symbolize freedom, hope, belief. It's actually the hardest part for me - to pick the right photograph with a right style, mood and sense for the double exposuring.
Well, this time I didn't have one prepared so needed to make a photograph which would fit perfectly. What I've done was putting on my winter coat, taking a looot of seeds - food to attract birds (as far as I live on the 11 th floor and needed bird with the sky on the background). I was feeding them and waiting till at least one of those greedy and lazy birds will fly up to the sky so I could photograph it :) it took me 2 hours, 25 pictures of birds which I had to put together so they would look like a crowd flying in the sky.

Processing part
I usually make exposure, white balance, hues and saturation corrections in Lightroom, and all the layering & blending work in Photoshop.
First of all I blended 17 best images I got with the birds together, plus image with a little bit of clouds to make it look more volumetric and cover a little bit of chest part of the girl.

It's totally ok if the background is dark and doesn't look good, after you blend the layers it becomes lighter and less detailed. To blend the layers I used Screen, Multiple & Soft light modes in Photoshop. As a result:

Yes, it still looks a little ugly, the background has this dirty grey color with smudges and blurs. But when you blend it with the main picture - it will change, you'll see. Let's take a look and talk about the main picture now.

I have already worked on it: erased the background and made it solid pink/grey color, dodged the highlights on the hair, face, arms so it would look contrasty after the blending, burned some shadows on the face and body as well to make clouds appear more bright. After I've prepared the main picture I put the picture with the birds above and blend them using Screen mode - which lightens the background and dodged parts and releases birds and clouds where the shadows are dark on the main picture!
Here's the result again:
how to create double exposure effect in Photoshop

So, basically what you do if you already have photographs prepared ( I mean main picture with plain background color and second "background" picture):
1 - place your main picture under the "background" picture;
2 - change the blending mode of the "background" picture from Normal to Screen.

Easy? :) if not - let me know and I'll try to make more detailed explanation.
Thank you!
